Alnus, Tilia, Betula … Such Pretty Girls!?

No, no, not girls from some pre-war drama on the TV, but trees, native broadleaves. Yesterday we started the tree-planting programme delayed by the atrocious spring this year. As you'll see from the photos below, our tree expert Liz Dixon-Spain (Award-winning garden designer and my mother!) was on hand to ensure we made the best of the trees despite a blustery and rain-soaked day.

A line of Beeches

There is a line of beeches there, we promise!

The trees planted in this tranche were: Beech (Fagus Sylvatica), Lime (Tilia Cordata), Silver Birch (Betula Pendata), Ash (Fraxinus Excelsior), Rowan / Mountain Ash (Sorbus Aucuparia), Alder (Alnus Incana) and of course Scots Pine (Pinus Sylvestris).  Over 100 two and three year old trees have been planted, along with 200 saplings. The Lairds' Woodland is off to a flying start. Here's Liz in action, planting an Ash (below)
